Our office sees children ages 1-21 years and special needs patients of any age. Here at Pediatric Dentistry we understand that some children need a little help to relax during their dental procedures which is why we offer a variety of options including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), in-office oral sedations, and outpatient surgery at Kosair Children’s Hospital, Kosair Children’s Medical Center, Premier Surgery Center of Louisville, and Jewish hospital of Shelbyville.!

Many children are afraid of the dental drill noise, as well as the shot and long lasting numb feeling that follows. When fixing a cavity, the laser at Pediatric Dentistry often eliminates the need for local anesthesia and the traditional noisy dental drill.

With a laser, we are able to do hard and soft tissue procedures. In addition to being able to remove dental decay, the laser can be used for procedures like frenectomies (tongue ties) and gingivectomies (removal of excess gum tissue) without sutures, bleeding, and often times without anesthesia. Procedures completed with the laser usually have a faster recovery time and painless healing, which helps make procedures easier, more comfortable, and less scary for children. Dr. Kim is the only pediatric dentist in the area to have a laser in her office. She received her training and certification from the American Academy of Laser Dentistry.

Dr. Kim has acquired an extensive medical background working with children who suffer from complex medical conditions and children with special needs, as she was a respiratory therapist at Kosair Children’s Hospital for seven years before entering the field of dentistry.

 

Dr. Kim does not believe in using papoose boards, restraints, or any other type of forceful means to get the job done. Extra time is spent with every special needs patent we see in order to make them feel more comfortable about their visit. Often times there is a need for more frequent visits in order for the patients to become more acclimated with our office, which is a need that Dr. Kim is more than happy to meet.
